The time was right. Going on a mission for the LDS Church seemed like the thing for Dean and I to do. We could afford to give a year and a half to the Lord. After all, all 5 of our children have served missions: Randy in Chile, Mike and Bart in California, Pete in Montana, and Carol in Thailand. Yes, we could be sent anywhere in the world—that is the scary and exciting anticipation of it after you submit your application. You go where the Lord calls you.
It turns out that we were called to go to a very unusual place to serve a mission: Salt Lake City! They noticed Dean’s engineering background and his experience with water, minerals and energy. He received a phone call from church headquarters asking if he would be interested in helping out in the Natural Resources office. Yes! And what would Judy do? Public Affairs, of course.
